My name is Leah and I’m a doctoral candidate in sociology here at Harvard. I grew up in metropolitan Atlanta and I’m still adjusting to the winters, but I love exploring the outdoors and the city up here. I attended Washington and Lee University in Virginia and received a BA in Sociology and German Language with a minor in Poverty and Human Capabilities Studies. After college, I worked in DC doing business development at a non-profit that employed wounded veterans and people with disabilities. My passion for understanding poverty and social policy led me here, where a good chunk of my research focuses on how community organizations and local governments address poverty. My dissertation is a study of the community organizational response to hunger and food insecurity in metropolitan Atlanta using mixed methods for both data collection and analysis. I've also done research on the grassroots progressive resistance groups that formed after the 2016 election. My passion to reduce inequities drives my academic work and much of what I do outside of Harvard. I have a habit of picking up new hobbies and I’ll try anything once! I love vanilla ice cream, superhero movies, listening to music, improv, hiking, fighting injustices, and anything to do with autumn.
